The text poetically explores Phillippians 2 (a well-known theological passage describing the kenosis of Christ). The arranger sets the first two verses similarly to the original hymn and then alters the remaining verses to interpretively reflect the text, which relates the humility of the first Advent of Jesus, His sacrificial death, His glorious resurrection and the adoration and praise He will one day properly receive from all. This message of the gospel makes the song fitting for any service in the church year, but particularly for those during Advent, Lent and Easter among others.
