    So Splendid!

This is one of my top five favorite classical pieces, and I agree with the previous writer's review, it is so moving that it can indeed evoke tears. British film director Bryan Forbes used portions of the first movement to great advantage in his superb 1962 film The L-Shaped Room, giving a heartfelt lift to many of the key scenes. It is both enobling and humbling in its various moods. I have no doubt that music, used correctly, can make a film or a play unforgettable. I first heard this piece when I saw the film televised when I was a teenager.
