This arrangement is the allegro movement of Handel's Op. 6, No. 1. It is an excellent example fo Baroque style, but is well within reach of the young string orchestra. There are so many things that can be taught from this marvelous work. Amy Rosen has meticulous realized this work for your string group. Allegro is an arrangement of the second movement of Handel's Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No.1. The concerto grosso was the principal form of orchestral music during the Baroque era. It is characterized by contrasts between a small group of soloists and the full orchestra. The solo sections are marked in the score and parts. If the director wishes to play the entire piece tutti, it is suggested that the solo section be played forte while the following tutti section is played piano as an echo. This piece is an excellent study in Baroque dynamics. The "terraced" dynamics are marked directly into the score and parts (e.g. p, mp, mf, f.)The Baroque bowing style is meant to have a slight separation between quarter notes and eighth notes, but not a short, staccato sound. All quarter notes and eighth notes are marked with dots to imply this kind of sound. It would be helpful for the director to work on the bow stroke with open strings prior to working on the piece in its entirety.
