Composed by Brian Streckfus. Arranged by Brian Streckfus. This edition: pdf. Instructional. Theory Worksheet. 1 pages. Brian Streckfus #1162693. Published by Brian Streckfus (A0.1591385).
This is a improvisation, theory, and composing exercise that you can also play. Music theory can feel dry, abstract, and unapplicable sometimes, so I try to make every music theory paper I give playable. If you see a Cmaj7#11 chord, how would you know what scale to play? This exercise explains which scale goes with which harmony.
Tips:
1. Of course, music often has multiple correct answers. You can often play pentatonic or blues if you like rock music, Major and minor feels more classical, harmonic minor seems like metal music and exotic, etc...
2. I would recommend describing these with non-musician terms such as mysterious and also describing what genre it reminds you of, such as mixolydian sounds like country music.
3. Memorizing the names can be intimidating and time consuming. It is still worth doing, but keep in mind all we are trying to do is play a scale that includes and does not deviate from the chord's letter names. So if you know your chord letter names, and the letter names on your guitar neck, simply ensuring that the chord's letter names are used is a valid way of working. This might also aid in coming up with unique and clever choices.
4. I made every note a hollow note so that you can see the letter name intentionally. Of course it is wholesome to know your letter names and intervals well. This will aid in one of the hardest aspects, understanding this paper in every key. A capo on a guitar can also help with this.
