This volume contains all the songs and duets by Pauline Viardot-García with original Spanish texts. It includes her original songs, songs based on (anonymus) popular music and arrangements of instrumental works by other composers and involving a substantial change of the piece: instrumental works turned into songs and were added with Spanish text.
Within her output of songs, her Spanish songs have special status, since Spanish music formed part of her personal and family universe, and constituted an essential part of her identity. Therefore, this group of pieces in Spanish takes us to her deepest cultural roots and show Viardot’s extraordinary ability to transfer these roots to other cultural contexts and to adapt her artistical proposal to the different demands of the audience and to the different abilities of the singers.
The arrangements of Chopin’s mazurkas, with French text are surely the most well-known pieces by Viardot. However, the original versions in Spanish have remained unpublished until now.
These songs are of great pedagogical as well as artistic interest, and are examples of the belcanto school developed by the García family.

El presente volumen contiene las canciones y los dúos de Pauline Viardot-García con textos originales en español. Incluye sus canciones originales, aquellas basadas en la música popular (anónima) y arreglos de obras instrumentales de otros compositores que implican un cambio sustancial en esas obras como es su transformación en piezas vocales con texto español añadido.
Las canciones españolas de Viardot poseen un estatus especial dentro de su producción de canciones, pues la música española formó parte de su universo íntimo y familiar, y conformó una parte esencial de su identidad. Por tanto, este grupo de piezas en español nos conduce a sus raíces culturales más profundas y nos muestra, además, la extraordinaria capacidad de Viardot de transferir esas raíces a otros contextos culturales, y de adaptar su propuesta artística a las distintas demandas del público y a las diferentes capacidades de los cantantes.
Las adaptaciones de las mazurcas de Chopin, con texto francés, son seguramente las piezas más conocidas de Viardot. Sin embargo, las versiones originales en español que se publican en este volumen han permanecido inéditas hasta ahora.
Estas canciones tienen un gran interés pedagógico además de artístico, y son ejemplos de la escuela de bel canto desarrollada por la familia García.

Il contient ses chansons originales, des chansons basées sur la musique populaire (anonyme) et des adaptations d'œuvres instrumentales d'autres compositeurs qui impliquent une modification substantielle de la pièce : œuvres instrumentales transformées en chansons et accompagnées de paroles en espagnol.
Au sein de sa production de chansons, ses chansons espagnoles occupent une place particulière, car la musique espagnole faisait partie de son univers personnel et familial et représentait une part essentielle de son identité. C'est pourquoi ce groupe de morceaux en espagnol nous ramène à ses racines culturelles les plus profondes et montre l'extraordinaire capacité de Viardot à transposer ces racines dans d'autres contextes culturels, tout en répondant aux différentes exigences du public et aux différentes capacités des chanteuses.
Les adaptations des mazurkas de Chopin avec des paroles en français sont certainement les morceaux les plus connus de Viardot. Les versions originales en espagnol sont cependant restées inédites jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
