Complete Organ Works II by Francois Clement Theodore Dubois Organ Solo - Sheet Music

By Francois Clement Theodore Dubois

Thodore Dubois (1837–1924) was one of the leading Parisian composers of the nineteenth century. Although his contemporaries frequently compared him to Delibes, Widor , and Lalo , his compositional style owes less to his own age than to the music of Mendelssohn, Weber, Gounod, and Berlioz.Volume II of this “Urtext” edition of Dubois’s organ music – the first edition of its kind – contains pieces for three-manual organ dating from his tenure as organist at the Church of La Madeleine in Paris . Straightforward in form, these works, all composed between 1877 and 1896, reflect his concern to produce music equally at home in the church and concert hall. Besides a detailed critical commentary in German, English, and French, the volume also contains a preface, facsimiles, and a catalogue of sources.

    Dubois and Le Belle Epoque

I truly enjoy the French School of organ playing as opposed to the German school. They are 2 very different entities. And Dubois is no exception. With his contemporaries (and luminaries) such as Guilmant, Saint-Sans, Gigout, et al Dubois finds himself in very good company. Barenreiter does, as almost always, an excellent job of printing and providing scholarly insights to the music. My only critique of Duboiss compositional style for organ is that he was composing for the instrument he was playing. Which means that if you arent playing at least a 3-manual organ, so much of his compositional flair is lost. This is too bad for people like myself who is a church musician on a 2-manual organ. So, if you dont have access to a 3-manual organ then this music, unfortunately, will not fit your instrument. Other than this fact, the music is excellent, French 19th-century music, the Belle Epoque of its time. Enjoy.
