Urtext. Composed by Franz Tunder. Edited by Michael Belotti. Solo instruments; Softbound. Edition Breitkopf. The organ works of Franz Tunder constitute an important stylistic link between Sweelinck and Buxtehude. Renaissance/early Baroque. Score. 120 pages. Breitkopf and Haertel #EB 8825. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.EB-8825).
ISBN 9790004183908. 12 x 9 inches.
The organ works of Franz Tunder consist of four preludes, one canzon and nine chorale settings. The works constitute an important stylistic link between Sweelinck and Buxtehude. On the basis of new findings on sources, stylistic aspects and performance practice of 17th-century organ music, Michael Belotti provides a new assessment of Tunders works and offers many new solutions concerning dubious or fragmentarily transmitted passages. In many cases, however, the editor decided to simply follow the sources, since they are superior to the attempted improvements of the earlier editions. For this reason too, Belottis new Urtext edition deserves the predicate very close to the sources.
The organ works of Franz Tunder constitute an important stylistic link between Sweelinck and Buxtehude.

Tunder
First off, and, quite simply, I highly recommend this attractive book of Franz Tunders work. Tunder was working along with contemporaries such as Froberger and Matthias Weckmann, and his choral preludes are typical, but poetic expressions of 17th century Baroque composition. His one Canzon is almost worth the entire volume, though, however, his chorales are also worth the purchase. Enjoy!
