The floating vocal sound created is reminiscent of both a choir in a cathedral and the plainsong origin of the melody. A wondrous tone cluster blossoms on the last "Holy Spirit.".

Not So Plainsong
A most striking effect occurs when Mauldin expands the texture to an eight-part texture on a minor thirteenth-chord/cluster at the word spirit, just prior to the closing sections of amens. The accompaniment, mostly in eighth notes, is simple yet masterfully written and provides tasteful dissonance against the voice parts at some points, accentuating the quarter-note motion in the voices. --Donald Callen Freed, CHORAL JOURNAL
