Originally attributed to Thomas Darby and Jimmie Tarlton in the 1920s, this sad tune has acquired folk music status. The stockade prisoner tries to put a bold face on his lost love and his lost life, but the doom is in the music. Generally, this is done in a major key; my arrangement, within the “pounding on the rock pile” accompaniment, switches from minor to major each verse.
