I created this arrangement with my seventh and eighth grade choir
students as a class composition project. Starting with the original folk
melody, the class composed a series of body percussion patterns which
are heard throughout the piece. The countermelody sung by the altos in
the second half is inspired by the Irish tradition of lilting, a form of folk
music in which singers use vocables to imitate the sounds of
instruments.
