"Cogitare" was commissioned by a friend, Sean MacCarthy-Grant.
Cogitare means To Think in Latin; After discovering a fitting title, the composer made it apparent to make each section sound like a different type of thinking. Section A, which is the most prominent in the beginning and then later pops up randomly in other parts of the piece, represents abstract or reflective thinking, shown through very airy, light, and idle polyrhythms. In section B, the pace of the piece picks up with very lyrical arpeggios, which are meant to represent creative thinking; and can be best visually described as a Jackson Pollock painting with splotches of color being thrown at a canvas -- a very outside-of-the-box approach. Which then leads the performer and audience into section C, another slow section; however, the polyrhythms feel more mechanical, meant to represent critical and concrete thinking. A stark contrast in comparison to the other types of thinking, relying on strict discipline. And towards the end, all the different motifs converge as one, representing neurons firing in the brain as new thoughts come and go throughout the day.
