Click Go The Shears – Jazz Combo (3 Horns)

Arranged for Jazz Combo with 3 Horns, this version of Click Go The Shears brings a fresh jazz interpretation to the classic Australian bush ballad. The arrangement alternates between a swinging 4/4 jazz feel and a lilting jazz waltz, giving performers opportunities for stylistic expression and ensemble interplay.

Instrumentation:

Trumpet
Tenor Sax
Trombone
Guitar (optional)
Piano
Bass
Drums

Background:

“Click Go the Shears” is a traditional Australian bush ballad recounting a day in the life of a sheep shearer before the advent of machine shears. A version of the song was first published in June 1891 in the Bacchus Marsh Express under the title The Bare Belled Ewe, with the tune credited to “Ring the Bell Watchman” and signed “C. C. Eynesbury, Nov. 20, 1891,” referencing the rural property in Victoria.

This jazz combo arrangement is ideal for school ensembles, community jazz bands, and professional small groups looking to explore iconic Australian repertoire with a modern jazz twist.
