Clef and Key Studies for Clarinet is intended to provide a comprehensive grounding in the melodic and harmonic gestures of each key center so that "muscle memory" and automaticity aid in the development of clef reading and transposition skills. Performers should find themselves reading transpositions the same way they read treble and bass clefs-with no ongoing, intervening calculation; transposing musical gestures, not individual notes. In addition to over five hundred scales and arpeggios and over two hundred short technical exercises, Clef and Key Studies for Clarinet provides a wealth of slow melodic studies aimed at developing tone and intonation. All exercises are placed within the context of keys and tonal centers so that the performer develops a vocabulary of musical structures that share a common syntax.
