Imagine an 18th century palace as it comes to life with the sounds of a ball being held in honor of visiting royalty. Classic Dance by Kenneth Baird recreates this stately traditional highly formal style of dance music. Enjoyable parts for all, a variety of basic bowings (two-note slurs, staccato quarter notes, slurred staccato), and a variety of dynamics make this an excellent choice for developing ensemble precision with early intermediate string orchestras. Entirely in first position (except for bass), Classic Dance could also provide a rewarding challenge for the final concert of the year for an outstanding beginning string orchestra. As was common in 18th century orchestra music, the cello and bass parts are virtually identical making Classic Dance musically satisfying even when performed without bass, whether by a string quartet or by a small string orchestra lacking basses. An optional violin III part is also provided for ensembles that are short-handed in viola. A rehearsal piano part is also included. String Orchestra (also suitable for string quartet). Early Intermediate or end of 1st year.
