This organ fantasy for Christmas is based on an old carol concerning two birds: The original carol tells of a conversation between a Carnal (Fr. corneille - crow) and a Crane about the birth of Christ.
The feel of this work is Renaissance, hence the odd registration suggestions: 8' Strings, 4' Flute on Great, 8' Flute on Swell ("birdlike"), with occasional 2' Flute thrown in to the Great - and a surprise 16" pedal reed on the final note. But my registrations are never carved in stone. Experiment; see what works for you.
"The Carnal and the Crane" should be a welcome addition to a performance of better-known traditional carols. The entire piece takes two minutes and twenty seconds to perform at the suggested tempo.
