Christmas Eve Suite - IV. Polonaise
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Christmas Eve Suite is a collection of music from his opera of the same name. The opera was composed between 1894 and 1895. The orchestral suite of the opera was composed in 1904 and consists of the introduction to the opera ('Holy Night'), Flight of Vakula, moon and stars, Polonaise, and return flight of Vakula and Christmas morning bells. Rimsky-Korsakov based his opera on a short story, "Christmas Eve", from Nikolai Gogol's 1832 collection Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka. The story takes place in the Ukrainian village of Dikanka where the blacksmith, Wakula, is in love with the daughter of a landowner, Oksana. Oksana will only marry him on the condition that he gets her the Tsarina’s golden shoes. In desperation, Wakula turns to the devil to fly him to the capital and help him procure the shoes. The Polonaise takes place in Act 3, Scene 3 and features a chorus. The song centers around a dance in a salon at the imperial palace in St. Petersburg on Christmas Eve, reflecting the opulence of the setting as courtiers sing the praises of their Tsarina.
About the Arrangement
This arrangement is written to be playable by most advanced high school groups. The piece is transposed down a full step from its original key (D Major) into a more band friendly key. This movement is playable as a standalone work or can be played combined with the 5th movement. If the 5th movement is being used, ensembles should skip over the short ending and play the connecting music straight into the next movement (with no pause). If performing as a stand-alone movement, take the short ending.
