"O Christmas Tree" is set in a funk style, complete with tongue-in-cheek dance break. "In the Bleak Midwinter" is the calm center with undulating changing meter and a heartbeat motif. "The Holly and the Ivy" is paired with a modal counterpoint, meant to obscure a clear sense of tonality and instead amass the harmony of all the keys at the same time. It ends with a breathing motif; a reminder to the performers and congregation in these mildly catastrophic times to "just breathe."
