For the youngest of string players with as little as ten weeks of study, Doris Gazda has given us a delightful setting of the ever-popular classical piece Chopsticks in a theme-as-variation format. This piece uses no more than the first three fingers on all strings and features very easy rhythmic patterns. For extra color, there is a pizzicato section. Parents will love this one!.
Chopsticks, in its original form, is a simple, repetitive, and easy to learn melody that many children and adults enjoy playing on the piano. This version is called Chopsticks Prism because after it presents the original melody, it takes on new forms while being played by string instruments. On the piano, Chopsticks always sounds as though it is being played staccato, whereas with a string orchestra it can sound legato. And, the strings can make the notes short by playing pizzicato. You might try playing Chopsticks Prism with some other styles of bowing such as martelé. Also, you can try writing and playing some original variations.
