Composed by traditional Gaelic hymn tune. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. This edition: pdf. Celtic, Christian, Christmas, Contemporary A Cappella, Irish. 8 pages. Scott S. Stewart #1313456. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.1752938).

Lachlan Macbean (1853-1931) was a Scottish collector of Gaelic songs and a Gaelic language enthusiast. He was involved in resurrecting almost forgotten Gaelic songs, of which ‘Leanabh An Àigh’ (Child in the Manger) was one first published in his Songs and Hymns of the Scottish Highland in 1888; with English text translated from the original Gaelic text of the Scottish poet and hymn writer Mary MacDougall MacDonald (1789-1872). She was a devout Baptist and never spoke English. Years later, the tune was adopted by Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965) an English author who published her hymn text as “Morning has Broken” (1931). English folk singer Cat Stevens stumbled upon Farjeon’s hymn while looking for another song or two for his album Teaser and the Firecat (1971), The hymn is based on the melody now known as “Bunessan” a village in Scotland, nearby MacDonald’s home, thus the name This arrangement of the Christmas hymn, “Child in the Manger” is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble (with divisi: SMATTBB at times) to be performed a cappella. It uses Macbean’s 1888 English translation from the original Gaelic text. Performance time: 3:15+-.
