Chiaroscuro is a term dealing with light and shade. As this piece developed my mind was drawn towards lightness and darkness in the sky as clouds form and change with weather patterns.
My goal with Chiaroscuro's Embrace is to present young bands with an opportunity to explore expressive musical elements they might not normally encounter until later while keeping the demands relevant for early second year players.
In this piece, the band will encounter tempo changes & some meter changes (4/4 & 2/4 interchange in the first theme, and the middle section representing darkness is in 3/4). Also, some longer crescendi and decrescendi do exist (10 beats long during the first theme). Nearly the entire piece is written using the bottom 7 notes of the concert Bb major scale (some instruments have a chance to play the top note at the end).
I sincerely hope you & your students enjoy this piece and that your band benefits from learning and rehearsing it.
