Born in Strasbourg, he combined practical musicianship with a scholarly bent, publishing instructional works such as Principes théoriques et pratiques de la musique and Le mécanisme du piano.
Among his compositions, the Ave Maria (published in 1875) stands out as a representative example of his style. It reflects the intimate, practical scale of parish and chapel music rather than the grandiosity of concert settings.
