This is an immensely effective work by a long-lived but almost unknown composer (in the U.S. at least). Samazeuilh was a good friend of both Debussy and Ravel, a successful critic, translator, and arranger, but pretty much gave up original composition long before his death at 90. Chant de la Mer is in three movements: a short prelude, a poetic picture of moonlight on the water, and an all-out virtuoso painting of a storm and sunrise. It frequently sounds like Ravel and Dukas (though not particularly like Debussy's La Mer)and will not please people who place originality over every other quality of music. But less exclusive people will find much to enjoy. With its complex textures and frequent double flats, it's not always easy to read, and Durand's cheap paper doesn't help. But very much worth exploring if you're up for an out-of-the-way challenge.
