“Challenge within” is composed by 4-time Grammy winning drummer, composer, producer Antonio Sanchez who scored and performed the soundtrack for the 2014 Academy-Award winning film, Birdman. Arranged by composer, arranger, trombonist John Yao and commissioned by Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, this big band chart is an altered blues form in 5/4 time with a driving groove and a hard-hitting style. Following the solos, the spotlight shifts to the drums supported by ensemble hits building up to a solo bass break, which sets up a rousing mambo section to close out the chart. Using intricate section writing and difficult lines, “Challenge Within” is a high energy chart that will push the limits of even the most advanced ensembles.
