The Chacony from Purcell's opera "Dido and Aeneas" is a beautiful piece, originally written for guitars: the full title is "A Dance Gittars Chacony".
I have arranged it for String Quartet, as it fits beautifully for strings and is aimed for either: a very stress-free addition for backgrond music pads for a pro quartet, or for a student quartet. If you're thinking of using it for students, these are the things to consider: Difficulties: there is a 15 bars of dotted rhythm passagework in the latter half of the piece in the two violin parts (in harmony) and the cello part (on its own), and the 1st violinist also has a trill. Apart from that: it's in c major; the only accidental is an F sharp; You could get away with playing the whole piece in 1st position in all parts. I'd recommend, because of the passagework, for the players to be of Grade 3 and above (ideally). However, if you're using this as a string orchestra challenge, perhaps hard working grade 2 players might also enjoy playing it.
