A haunting melody in canon between the bass viol (viola da gamba) and keyboard is played over a descending "ground" (repeating bassline).
From Purcell’s tragicomic semi-opera “The Prophetess, or The History of Dioclesian” (London, 1690), this beautiful canon over a ground was originally for two recorders and basso continuo. Here, we have a duet for a bass viola da gamba with the other canonic part in the keyboard player’s right hand, making a true duo for viol and keyboard (harpsichord or organ). A few editorial fingerings are included.
