Ceora is a classic composition by legendary trumpeter Lee Morgan. This arrangement, as is often the case in my work, was originally written for one of the jazz combos I direct in an educational setting.
To feature the vocalist more effectively within the ensemble, I invited Diana Russo to write original lyrics for the tune, with the goal of performing it at our end-of-year concert. The result proved to be highly successful, and for this reason I chose to publish it as the first release in the Jazz Combo Series.
Following a brief introduction, the solo voice presents the melody, supported by light background figures that develop into a clear call and response during the repeat of the A section.
A Trumpet solo (Voice I) follows, leading into a Tenor Saxophone solo (Voice III), with the option to substitute Flute (Added 1).
The third chorus is introduced by a modulation to Ab, bringing the piece back to its original key for a full orchestral special. This section is based on Lee Morgan’s original solo, carefully reharmonized and re-orchestrated in keeping with traditional jazz arranging practices.
Next are a Piano solo and an Alto Saxophone solo (Voice III), or optionally a Trombone solo (Voice IV), each supported by written background figures.
A final modulation to Eb signals the return of the voice for the last statement of the theme, which concludes in the spirit of the original recording, with the customary three repeats of the final two measures.
To provide maximum performance flexibility, the PDF also includes an optional Trumpet and Trombone duet in place of the solo voice, as well as four additional solo parts for instruments in Bb, Eb, and C (bass clef).
