By the age of 50, fter years of struggling for recognition, Dvořák had become a world-famous composer.

The initial idea for the cello concerto probably came from the cellist Hanuš Wihan, one of Dvořák's colleagus at the Prgue Conservatory. Dvořák did most of the work on it in New York through the winter of 1894-5. Then, deeply moved by the death of his sister-in-law Josefina Kunitzová, with whom he had been in love as a young man, he added an extra section to the ast movement when he returned to Prague.

The world première of this work was given in London, at a Philharmonic Society concert, on 19 March 1896. It was conducted by Dvořák, but Wihan was unable to to be present, and the solo part was taken by Leo Stern, another leading cellist of the time. Like the New World Symphony before it, the concerto was an instant success. It also proved to be Dvořák's last major concert work.

The second movement (Adagio) opens with a heartfelt melody, all relating to Dvořák's tender feelings for Josefina, falling notes - sounding like a succession of sighs - are heard. Also anxiety over her illness. As the movement progresses to its close, it ends positively (acceptance).

In this orchestration, the violin takes the melody. However, the cello does the falling notes referred to above. Enjoy!
