Autumn Songs (2008) for trumpet and piano is dedicated to Michael Ewald. The work—part of
an ongoing project which, to date, also includes Spring Songs (2006)—consists of four lyrical
songs without words.
Although conceived as an entire set, the movements may also be played individually or in any
combinations.
This music was composed in the spring of 2008 for Michael Ewald. Ewald passed away on
September 12, 2008 after a sudden and brief battle with aggressive cancer. Colby Cooman
presented the world premiere in his memory in autumn 2008 at the University of Illinois,
Urbana-Champaign, where Ewald had been a faculty member for many years.
Performance Note: Dynamic markings are kept to a minimum and convey the basic shapes of
each lines and section and are meant as a basic guide, not a comprehensive marking of every
nuance. Both trumpet and piano should seek to convey the expressive, lyric, vocal colors of the
music. The set includes parts for both Bb and C trumpets.
