Carry Me Back to Old Killarney is a great way for an Advanced Intermediate Concert Band to celebrate life in Ireland or Scotland. It’s in the style of an Irish jig, but just a bit slower. Of course, if your band is up to it, the tempo can be increased to sound more traditionally Irish.
It opens with the sound of bagpipes in the low brass, and a tender rendition of the main melody by the woodwinds. Then, everyone joins the fun and the tune is modified, entwined with some bright countermelodies, and tossed around. The key was chosen to make fingering as easy as possible. It even visits another key in the middle so that the French horns can play the melody more easily, then returns to the original.
Full of emotion and energy, drama and action, it’s perfect for concert, and even better for contest at an accelerated tempo.
