Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych wrote this carol, now heard in shopping malls everywhere, in 1914. He based it on an old Ukrainian folk song. It started out in pre-Christian Ukraine as a song to celebrate the new year, which started then with spring in April. With Christianity and the Julian calendar, the new year moved to January, and then its original lyricist -- the song was written for a choir -- added stuff about bells and carols, and it migrated a few days earlier to become a Christmas standard.This arrangement is for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC and tuba.
