Originally written around 1900 for flute and piano, the "Carmen" Fantasy on Themes from Bizet’s Opera is one of very few surviving works of Francois Borne. He was a virtuoso flutist who played with the Grand Theatre of Bordeaux and was professor of flute at the Toulouse Conservatory. The work is a showpiece favourite and has been orchestrated several times over the past 100 years. This version is an arrangement for flute and string quartet (flute, violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello). The flute part is unchanged except for some editorial suggestions and corrections from the sources.
