Scored four 4 Bb Clarinets, or three Bb Clarinets and Bass Clarinet. In order to seek some respite from his disastrous marriage, Tchaikovsky went on holiday to Rome with his brother Modest. The ‘street music’ and folk songs that he heard there provided the inspiration for Capriccio Italien which he composed in 1880. This theme is typical of the lively nature of much of the rest of this ‘Italian fantasy’.
