Originally written for solo piano, Cantilena et Ricercare is a diptych based on an elegiac melody joined by an ostinato chordal accompaniment. The second piece, Ricercare, is based on point of imitation in the Renaissance style, where the theme is introduced by one voice and subsequently echoed by others. The development of the piece results in the climatic fast-moving passage in the high register, which is followed by the restatement of the original melancholy theme of the cantilena.
Écrite à l'origine pour piano seul, Cantilena et Ricercare est un diptyque basé sur une mélodie élégiaque accompagnée d'un accompagnement d'accords ostinato. La deuxième pièce, Ricercare, repose sur un point d'imitation dans le style Renaissance, où le thème est introduit par une voix, puis repris par les autres. Le développement de la pièce aboutit à un passage final rapide dans l'aigu, suivi de la reprise du thème mélancolique original de la cantilène.
