Canon and Gigue in D major by Johann Pachelbel is one of the most recognizable pieces of Baroque music. Composed in the late 17th century, it was originally written for three violins and basso continuo.
The Canon is built on a repeating bass line, known as a ground bass, over which the three violins enter one after another in imitation.
