The restrained sonority of the accompaniment, together with its gently inflected chromatic writing, supports the expressive nuance of the vocal line.
The music is shaped by a flexible tempo scheme, allowing contrasts of movement and reflection to emerge in response to the text. This reflects the nature of the tune that John Gay borrowed for the song, "Grim King of the Ghosts"
Just needs four performers: soprano, violin, viola and double bass (can be adapted for cello).
