Sparse pizzicatos depict the appearance of different species in geological time, over string chords that swell from a primordial bass drone. A repeated descending 16th-note arpeggio figure evokes a sense of marvel, while motifs are traded around the ensemble, culminating in a wondrous clarinet fluorish. This gives way to a choral section that tries to reconcile the theory of evolution with simulation theory. The latter portion of the piece follows a slow descending bass line from F3 to C1, while motifs are formulaically passed among the instruments, inspired by Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten by Arvo Pärt.
Instrumentation is soprano, flute, clarinet, 5-string violin, 4-string violin, viola, cello, bass, piano. The middle section of the piece requires that the instrumentalists cover additional vocal parts (alto, tenor, bass 1, bass 2—see Vocal Score).
