The title and lyrics paint a nostalgic and almost forelorn wish to go back to California, and since the song was written and inspired by a snowy day in New York in 1963 it's easy to understand why. When the song was released in 1965 it was not an immediate success and only charted in January 1966 thanks to a Boston radio station, but by March it peaked at No.4 and eventually became the top single of the year with 17 weeks in the charts. The style is call-and-response, where the melody is interpersed with answering phrases and the whole choir should feel part of the total sound. In this arrangement, the parts can be assigned to almost any combination of voices - male voices on the lead, female voices on the harmony parts for instance. The instrumental section (originally with an alto flute solo) has been added to the piano accompaniment, and the voices could even hum along to that melody. This arrangement would suit intermediate school and secular choirs, and the sound should be strong, direct, and passionate.
