This etude moves beyond standard walking vocabulary, blending angular intervallic motion with Baroque-inspired implied counterpoint and forward-pushing voice-leading that deepens both harmonic and melodic awareness.
The harmony follows the tune closely, with only minimal substitutions. The fifth line uses a set of chord changes commonly played during the blowing/improvisational sections on the bandstand—changes that open up the harmonic flow for soloists—but they do not align perfectly with Henderson’s original written melody.
Fully notated in standard notation (no tablature), this etude is designed for intermediate to advanced bassists looking to expand their phrasing, harmonic fluency, and conceptual approach to walking bass—without relying on positional patterns or rote licks.
