Dieterich Buxtehude (c. 1637–1707) was a German organist and composer of the Baroque era. He is known for his large-scale works, including the Toccata in B flat major (BuxWV 155), which is one of his most famous pieces. The Toccata was composed in 1690 and is a virtuosic display of the organ’s power and range. The piece begins with a long and stately introduction, which is followed by a lively and energetic fugue. The fugue is then repeated, but with different variations. This creates an exciting contrast and a sense of musical momentum. The piece ends with a short, chromatic passage which leads to a triumphant conclusion. The Toccata is one of Buxtehude’s most popular and beloved works and it has been performed and recorded by many renowned musicians. It is a testament to the great skill and creativity of Buxtehude, and is a beloved example of Baroque music.
