This rendition has taken the main tune from the first movement and abridged it to fit into a short 5 minute stand alone piece.
This arrangement is for 2 advanced solo violinists, optional guzheng, harp, or piano, and an intermediate student string orchestra. The 2 solo violin parts here are symbolic of Zhu Yingtai (祝英臺), the story's protagonist, and of Liang Shanbo (梁山伯), her lover. The first movement describes Zhu’s road to Hangzhou for her studies. As a young woman she is forbidden to attend school so she becomes disguised as a man. She meets Liang for the first time and their passionate journey begins, first as a sweet friendship and then finally as a tragic, forbidden love.
