This piece explores the dance-like qualities of string instruments. Butterfly Chassé is dedicated to little girls everywhere who dare to dream, twirl, and approach life with imagination and curiosity.
There is a playful and whimsical element to the main theme in this work, and the secondary theme, a waltz, is a tender lullaby. At times, these two themes (in two different meters) overlap and create a unique feeling of childhood nostalgia, tender love, and a bright hope for the future, against all odds.
The dance-like pulse of this work is fundamental to its structure, inspired by "petite allegro" ballet movements. Bach’s fugal compositions also inspired some of the writing choices and voicings. The phrases often get cut off by new voice entrances and ideas, creating long periods of time with no cadential completion. The lack of resolution in the work, even over long pauses, creates a forward momentum that feels reaching, limitless, and free.
