Composed by John Bull. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. This edition: pdf, streaming. Chamber, Early Music, Historic, Sacred, Standards. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #1347667. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1787570).John Bull (c.1562–1628) was one of the great English keyboard virtuosos of the late Renaissance, and many of his works are preserved in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. His In Nomine XXXVII belongs to a distinctly English tradition of instrumental pieces built over the ancient Sarum chant “Gloria tibi Trinitas,” heard here as a calm cantus firmus surrounded by flowing counterpoint. In this arrangement for cornet, French horn, and baritone horn, Bull’s intricate lines take on a warm, organ‑like sonority, with each player sharing in the imitative dialogue. The result is a compact, contemplative miniature that suits both liturgical use and the concert hall.
