This derivative arrangement of 'Bridge over troubled water' includes the addition of an original song titled 'Songs are bridges' by the arranger Richard Vella. The arrangement is scored for 3 sopranos, 3 altos, 2 tenors, and 2 basses. This enables the exploration of various types of contrapuntal textures: from a simple melody and drone texture to complex polyphony. The additional original song combines words by Richard Vella, and the poem 'Faith is the pierless bridge' by the poet Emily Dickinson (1830 -1886). This occurs at the beginning and end of the arrangement and functions as a type of framing device to highlight the polyphonic setting of 'Bridge over troubled water'.
The piano enters halfway into the arrangement and provides a gentle repeating 5-6 pattern underneath the various vocal textures. If a singing bowl is not available for the opening drone texture, any instrument able to sustain the note C5 (for example glass harmonica or the gedackt register of a pipe organ) can be used.
