At almost 12 minutes long, this piece would be one of the main selections on a concert program or recital. The three-movement quintet for 2 trumpets, horn, trombone, and tuba is quite challenging. The first movement is hard-driving; you might even call it "macho." All five parts are difficult. The slow second movement lets the horn player demonstrate the low register of the instrument as they introduce the dark, gradually-ascending theme. Then they demonstrate the high register. It's only fair, after all. The piece concludes with a lighter (but not light) allegro.
