The aim of this combined scholarly and practical edition of the Brandenburg Concertos is to offer a state of the art performance material of these standard works of Baroque music literature, which satisfies the practical needs of performing artists. These new editions were based on surviving autographic source material - some of which, for the Fifth Concerto for example, has been taken into account for the first time - and the 'Neue Bach-Ausgabe' (NBA). Moreover, they also make use of relevant 18th-century theoretical writings for editorial additions and observations on performance practice.(from the joint preface to the "Six Brandenburg Concertos" by the Bach scholars Werner Felix, Winfried Hoffmann and Armin Schneiderheinze).

Excellent for an advanced player
I have always loved the alto recorder solos in the Brandenburg #2. Such fun to listen to.For the most part, the piece lies well on the fingers, although it is certainly not for beginners.However. To the best of my knowledge, the range of the alto recorder is F on the staff to F above the staff- 2 octaves. This piece goes from F on the staff to G above the staff, which I cannot find any way to sound. It reaches the high G many times. There are also long sections where the entire passage is up around high E and high F, which players may find challenging. Transposing the entire piece is not an option, because then the lowest notes would be below the instrument's range. The only solution I have found is to drop the highest passages a full octave, and try to make the segues back and forth as smooth as possible. All of that makes the overall piece more challenging than the technical difficulty of most of it.
