Arrangement by Daniel Kaplan for woodwind quintet of Brahms's Eight Klavierstücke (8 Piano Pieces), Op. 76. This remarkable set initiates, or anticipates, the late Brahms outpouring of short character pieces for piano---a form to which, from Op. 116 on, he was to devote most of his output. The Op. 76 set includes four Cappriccios and four Intermezzi, of varying characters, from impassioned and dramatic to folk-dance-like or calm, meditative, wistful, elegiac, even static. The pieces are striking in their variety of moods and their complex harmonies and unconventional rhythmic features. Perhaps surprisingly, they work well on woodwind quintet.
The arrangement is intended for advanced or advanced-intermediate players. To accommodate the registers chosen by the composer, the arrangement features oboe doubling on English Horn, as well as clarinet in B-flat doubling on clarinet in A (to avoid key signatures with many sharps---although for those clarinettists who lack an A clarinet, an alternative part entirely in B-flat is also provided). As is typical for arrangements of piano music, the horn part lies somewhat low, ranging from (concert) E2 to A4.
This is part of Kaplan's project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players. He has arranged many other great works for this ensemble, including favorites from Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, organ preludes and fugues, and music by Vivaldi, Mozart, Dvorak, Schubert, and little-known 20th-Century composer John Davison.
