Bound for the Rio Grandewas one of the favorite sea shanties among outward bound British and American ships during the 19th century. And the Rio Grande referred to in this song is that one in the southernmost part of Brazil known as Rio Grande do Sul. A song handed down through oral (aural) means by the rough and tough salty sailors from the great days of sail produced many variations to text, temperament and purpose. Yet the common denominator in all versions is saying good-bye to loved ones left behind in order to pursue the dreams of adventure and riches. This rollicking setting is scored for 4-part SATB (optional bass solo) ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 4:08+-
