In 2000, Joni Mitchell released an orchestral re-recording of "Both Sides Now" on her album of the same name. This choral arrangement which was commissioned by Chanticleer draws inspiration from that orchestral version. In the final refrain ("I've looked at life from both sides now, from win and lose..."), the harmony splits into two simultaneous keys. This polytonal effect musically depicts Mitchell's older self reflecting on her past, with the original key representing her younger voice while a new key represents her mature perspective.
This arrangement may easily be sung one or even two whole steps higher.
