A must-have for every pianist
BOOK REVIEW:The Art of Piano Fingering: Traditional, Advanced and Innovative by Rami Bar-Niv (214 pages)I am thrilled that this is in my library as a journey built upon familiar territory, but so thoroughly thought through that what seems obvious on the surface reveals deeper layers about how fingering choices are related not only to technique, but also to interpretation. The little picture is related to the big picture. There are lots of technical tips, too, outside of fingering choices-- For example, breathing as though you are singing or playing a wind instrument while you play.Bar-Nivs writing is compact and full of exercises and examples from the repertoire (I counted 126 illustrative excerpts from the repertoire.) He includes many photographs of hand position on each page. The book starts at the very beginning of piano technique scales, chords, inversions, arpeggios, 7th chords; then continues to further traditional, advanced and innovative fingering tools.
