Schmitz has made quite a name for himself as a master of jazz-related music and as the author of the The New Jazz Parnassus and Mini-Jazz volumes. In these 18 exercises ranging in difficulty from easy to medium, he leads us step by step to the fully formed boogie woogie. By playfully familiarizing themselves with the typical elements of the boogie woogie, learners are drawn into the making of the pieces. A chart listing all the figures and riffs encourages further experimentation.

A solid boogie study book
This is a terrific book for developing a good foundation of boogie styles. There are 18 exercises, generally progressing in difficulty, developing riffs and phrases for both the left and right hand. All 18 exercises are in written in the key of C, and for a reason. At the back of the book the basic riffs from all 18 exercises are summarised together, for left hand and right hand. The idea then is for the reader to try mixing combinations of left and right hand riffs from the 18 original exercises. You really need to have mastered the original riff pairs in order to start mixing them.Great exercises, some nice riffs, and mixing the combinations at the end is a real plus. The only improvement I can think of is to add more groups of exercises doing similar exercises in keys like G, E and A, which is handier than C when playing with such as guitarists. Or maybe publish separate versions in a few other keys - I'd but them.
